I work in musical theater, striving to create healing and therapeutic experiences through feminist comedy and drama. An experienced musician, I work in a home studio using real and virtual instruments in an audio-centric, poetic approach to writing. My current project, “Rosario”, shares the life and work of Mexico’s first feminist, Rosario Castellanos. I fell in love with Castellanos when I discovered her poetry and social justice strategies, often involving brilliant humor. I tell her story using my translations of her poetry, articles, novels, speeches, and doctoral thesis, combined with my own writing. When translating her poetry into song, I try to be very conscious of the rhythm of the words. Most will work equally well in English and Spanish; my goal is to create versions in both languages.
Castellanos’ unique contributions to feminism are all but unknown in the United States and fast disappearing from bookshelves in Mexico. I hope that this musical will help to fix that and also bring healing laughter to its audience.
